Look, if you had, one shot, or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted, one moment
Would you capture it?
Or just let it slip

Day 4: I've run a marathon, but I'm not a runner...

A year ago I would have told you my strength was running.  After all, I have run in 26 races, including 2- 1/2s and a full marathon.  Surely if I could gut it out for 26.2 miles, I would be able to hang in Cisco's class.  When I fell in love with boxing, I put running on the back burner.  I used to plan to run, crank up the Ipod and just truly love the escape.  Cisco definitely humbled me tonight as he made running a big part of the workout.

As I got prepared at my bag to begin class, I noticed Cisco sporting the shades and walking his tattooed body in circles around the bag.  He was totally in the zone and his pace was increasing.  As he shouted instructions to get the feet moving, he added, "You better be ready."  I looked over at Chiarelli and said, "Oh crap!"  Within 2 minutes, we had the gloves on and were headed outside.  Cisco took off like a shotgun around the parking lot and the back side of the building.  I've never been a fast runner and keeping up was a challenge.  I pretty much have 1 speed for any length of a race I had previously run.  I was a distance runner and paced myself, not a sprinter.  Thankfully, I was able to maintain a pace to finish the 2 laps in the middle of the pack.  OK, that was a great warm-up and now was ready to hit the bag.  We started hitting the bag with 10 fast punches, then 10 power punches.  Then, back outside to run again.  At least it was a wonderful sunny 70 degree day and was perfect for being outside.  I believe the final count was 9 rounds of running in between the 10 punch combos of boxing.  I think I starting feeling like I could upchuck while finishing round 6.  As Cisco continued to yell lovingly terms of endearment in an Army Bootcamp style, I was just trying to focus on breathing.  I breathed a sigh of relief when he informed us that this was the last time to run so we better make it count.  I sprinted, well the fastest I could run anyway on the last incline to finish.

As the workout inside continued with bag work and sculpting our abs, I had no idea what time it was.  Luckily, I didn't know where the clock was even located.  Shortly before closing out the class, Cisco asked who would like to go on a surfing trip with him.  Well, of course that sounds like adventure and fun!  He chuckled to himself, as he told us to get into a surfing pose and hold.  It was as if I were in the middle of the ocean riding the Pipeline like Kate Bosworth in Blue Crush.  The only difference was my legs were on fire like never before and probably wouldn't look quite as good as Kate in a bikini :) Cisco next said the sweetest 4 words I had heard all day..."Wipe down your bags."

Today, I realized this challenge is more than just meeting this crazy goal.  It's what I am learning at each club from each trainer and also the diverse group of people that attend.  It's like my little gift to take with me.  Cisco's style is definitely different from any other trainer I have experienced. That is the beauty of shaking things up.  Thanks Cisco for bringing visibility to my "opportunities." You lived up to all of Chiarell's stories!  Running needs to part of my workouts again to get the right balance.  Maybe this is just the kick my body needs?

I also learned that Tracy @ Parkville is RAD!  She has such great positive energy.  I loved getting her advice on her protein shakes and what she eats to get those rippin muscles.

Chiarelli taking a shot in the ring.....

Alright Dusty at 119th & Metcalf....My feet plan to hit the floor tomorrow morning at 5:15.  I will see you at 5:45 in the a.m. to kick my day off right!
